Probably doing Top 10 Finishers and Top 2 Teams.
This is High School, so we can't do Medal / Bottle Openers or anything...
T-shirts might work, and would help promote the meet... sizing would be a PITA, but whatevs...
Thoughts?

"Top 10" t-shirts. I got one at a big invitational XC race once and thought it was awesome.
stick with medals for individuals, that is what most people strive for in high school.
For team awards, T-shirts with the race logo would be acceptable.
great $1 items.
"A Donation has been made in your name to the Human Fund."
A participation medal that says: "This medal is poking fun at people who get upset about participation medals"
I would be happy to donate bottled farts.
Watermelons.
You could give out pets to the top 10 finishers. Something like a small bird or rodent would be cool. I remember getting a leopard gecko from a race before. It is something I'm sure all kids would like more than a boring medal.
How about stainless steal water bottles?

Hats? Do kids run in hats?
Avoids the sizing problem. Could be TOP 10 on the hat
Nice back packs.
Not those "spike bags."

If you do medals, just make sure you have enough for everybody. It's always awkward when they forget to order enough and most of the kids don't end up getting one. I've seen this happen a surprising number of times.
Long ago a track meet awarded In-N-Out gift certificates (each valid for 1 double double) to winners. That was way better than medals etc.

Pretty cool .
Why not go to your local ASPCA and adopt every cat , dog , ferret , raccoon , rabid wolverine , python that is about to be put down and award those to the victors .
Can't go wrong with participation goldfish neither .
Fidget spinners in gold, silver, bronze for teams.
The best award that I've received was a tire iron with my place on it that they gave out to the top 10. That made sense, because there was a set of train tracks along part of the course, and they kind of incorporated it into the feel of the meet.
I would find something unique about your course and use that. If you can't come up with something then maybe coupons to an athletic website along with medals. T-shirts are also a good idea.
How about 2 awards. One for 1st place overall and 1 for 1st place team. Everybody else goes home devastated!
Dog tags.
