When doing intervals, what are the different physiological responses to differing rest periods?
People talk about having too long or too short a rest in between intervals.
What does too short a rest mean? What does too long mean? What is your body doing when you start again too soon? Or rather, what is it missing out on?

The rest inteverval is meaningless unless expressed in relation to time/distance , the number of reps, and intensity of effort. All other things being equal, shortening the rest period will deplete your anaerobic reserves faster and in theory condition you accordingly. To answer the question of whether a given rest interval is "too short" or "too long," we first have to define our goal clearly. What task are we training for exactly?
Well, instead of me making up some random interval workout for a distance, could you make up the numbers and explain them?
You could say we are training for 5000m.
Perhaps the intervals are 400m or 500m or 1000m (you tell me!)
How would you go about working out the numbers involved for: number of reps, intensity of reps, rest time. Could you then modify one of those variables, e.g. intensity, and tell me how and _why_ the rest should change? And how the number of reps should change?
If you happen to need a more specific question, then let's examine people who use heart rate dropping down to a particular level before starting their next rep. How should that number be chosen?
Thanks very much!
