Is this the norm these days? It seems like people just don't give a damn about others around them.

I have also found that fish dislike those who don't use turn signals.

It's none of your business where I'm going.
How bow when we race on the track. Want me to signal for you, give you a heads up? How bow give you a Mo heart when I'm pulling over, is that OK?

Sir, I'm sorry, but I don't speak jive.
See a broad who get all booty-eyed, lay'em down and smack'em yack'em?
Do you live in Austin? I noticed that there.
Ah you must live among a bunch of BMW drivers
People, people, people, they are called indicators for a reason. Wise up all and start helping others work out what you are going to do in your potentially lethal machines.
suburb of Richmond, VA (Midlothian). I really see no one particular socioeconomic, gender, age, racial, or ethnic correlation from viewing the particular vehicle and driver.
They love to do that in my area too. They also like to drive through parking lots to avoid red lights at intersections and drive in the emergency lanes like they are normal car lanes. Oh, FL...I hate you.
Oh man, I feel your pain. I live in metro DC and nobody here uses them either. Can't tell you how many times a day I approach an intersection, either driving or running, and *nobody* is signaling except me. We could all get thru the intersection so much more efficiently if everybody communicated what their plan was.
Okay, I'm finished ranting :-D
The same people tend to ignore the turn signals of others as well. That blinky light means that I'm coming over. I'm only asking for a single car length plus ~3 feet of wiggle room. You're going to beep at me when I start coming over, but I gave you the warning that you needed.
Funny thing is that people in Manhattan are usually great about letting people over when they signal, but people in rural areas are horrible about it. Kind of refutes the stereotype that big city types are impatient while rural folk are laid back.
It seems to be a generational thing. Most of us old geezers use our turn signals. Many, not all, younger drivers don't.
I totally agree with 'ewga' who said, "We could all get thru the intersection so much more efficiently if everyone communicated what their plan was." The problem seems to be those drivers who drive with their heads stuck up their...
One of the things that really irritates me is when I'm trying to pull out to the right onto a busy street and some clown who is approaching from my left turns right onto the street I'm on without using his turn signal. If he had given me the signal I could've pulled out, but instead I'm still stuck until there's a break in traffic or a considerate driver, who is turning onto my street, uses his/her turn signal.
Stay out of the fast lane if there's open road in front of you, don't tailgate, use your turn signals. Three simple rules that would make driving more pleasant and safer. Sadly there are more and more inconsiderate and arrogant drivers every year.
OP lives in the South.
I came to expect a certain laziness when living in the PNW, but New Orleans has taken it to another level. My informal observations put turn signal use at 1 in 10 drivers. Maybe less.
Where I live, a bunch of transported Yankees call them directional signals instead of turn signals...which annoys the carp out of me.
Smells fishy.
Here's what it comes down to: if you have to signal, 90% of the time that means you messed up and were out of position. It is of no surprise to me that mostly old people use their signals, as they are often poor drivers.

Agree, but then you have to trust that the other driver is intending to actually turn right, and hasn't left their signal on, etc.
I does annoy me though when I am the other car in that situation and I put my signal on and the car pulling out just sits there. Come on man, trust me!
I prefer that other drivers don't know where I'm going. Most accidents happen when things change on the roads. If everyone is going 60 mph and staying in their lane, accidents wouldn't happen. If I change lanes and don't signal, then I only need to worry about one human's decision making ability, mine. If I signal, I then need to take into account the irrational/unpredictable behavior of the other driver. For example, will the driver let me in? Will the speed up and force me to wait? Will they do something really dumb that I don't even know about? Example two, merging, some people speed up, some people slow down, some people will pace right next to you. When I merge, I drop the f'ing hammer and take control. No decisions for the other guy, I'm going first, and that's the way its going to be. Driving safely is about eliminating variables. Human interaction/behavior is about as large of a variable that exists.
