Wow, lot of verbs in the title. Anyways, I have jumped 6'2'' in the high jump which is considered good for a 5'9'' freshman. The problem is my run up, I scratched on the run up four times as the meet progressed because as I lifted off I jumped off 2 feet, which has been a habit of mine in the past. If it helps, I'm not really speed-based as I also run long distance (not very good), but due to years of basketball and gymnastics have developed a 34 inch vertical, hope that helps. I usually just go for a J pattern but don't measure my steps. Are you supposed to? My coach doesn't know much about high jump.
