There is a lot of talk out there about Gavin Kennedy (Wisco assistant) and his prospects of earning a head distance position somewhere else. This brings a couple questions to mind. I think a lot of people assume that Mick is heavily involved with all of his middle and long distance athletes, and that Gavin is his top helper. This is a possibility, and is how a lot of places work.
However, another model that gets used a lot is that the Head Coach works with the stars, and the assistant works with the developmental athletes. Like for instance, not every NOP athlete works directly with Alberto. Engels, Murphy, and some others work with Pete Julian, the assistant.
I guess what Im really asking is, what system does Mick install? How much coaching does Mick and Gavin do, who works with who? If Mick works with the stars only, I would have to think he is doing a pretty solid job. Almost all of the listed burn out guys from previous posts would really be considered more like developmental athletes. I know that can be difficult to hear, because we are talking about wisco born and bred athletes, and we hold them near and dear to our hearts since we watched them run at state.
Personally, I dont know how things work at wisco, but I kind of think Mick is probably doing a lot better job than we give him credit for, and I wonder if Gavin Kennedy is really as good as some people say.
Food for thought, maybe someone can give us some inside knowledge.
