I think he just wasn't feeling it and shut it down.
He just won the Trials. He's in shape.

Of course he wasn't feeling it and he shut it down. That's exactly what I'm saying.
However, I do think that he would have finished had this been some regular race under normal circumstances (meaning no standard chasing).
This seems very obvious to me, but I do not claim to be in the know.
