What disadvantage is there to sharing a lane at the start of an 800? There presumably is one because you're more cramped and so more likely to come into contact with another runner. Also, how is that doubling up allocated? Is it a random draw?

it does seem silly. since the measure line radius is 30cm away from the white line, one runner is actually put at a disadvantage as the first 100m they have to run additional distance on the outer portion of the same lane.
