I have been running for 7 years. Sub 20 has been a goal of mine ever since I took the sport up, I am nowhere near as fast as most people here. Not even close.
I have tried about 6 different plans pver the years including higher milage plans (45MPW), I have also tried lower milage plans(20MPW) with quality workouts every few days once a decent base has been built, I have also had a few different coaches (I can no longer afford a coach) but no matter what approach I take I cannot seem to dip below the 22 minute mark for the life of me. I am also at a very ideal weight (my bmi is 21) and eat a lot of highly nutritious food so it's rather frustrating being stuck with very mediocre times. I also get about 7 hours of sleep a night which I'm not sure if is just below ideal- but I don't think it should be a limiting factor with such a mediocre goal such as a sub 20.
I really don't want to stress my body out striving for a goal I may not even be physiologically capable of, as I have been overtrained in the past and it put me out for about seven months and I was ill but i just feel like after the amount of time I've spent running- if I was meant to run sub 6:30 miles I would have done so by now especially considering I'm 24. I have to point out that I am also the same with cycling, I have never made any drastic aerobic improvements and I feel like I am a very low responder even though I've spent most of my life active.
Is there anyone else out there who clearly lacks talent and has poor aerobic adaption who has managed to at least in some way make a breakthrough with their running? If so, how did you do it? I need new things to try.
