I'm a high school junior used to running 40 mpw. If I wanted to get my mileage up to 60 in one summer, should I do this by doubling 2-4 times a week?

Assuming that you are getting in a decent long run of 12-14 miles, shooting for 60 miles per week means 46-48 miles in addition to your long run. I think most would suggest a secondary medium long run. For someone your age, let's call that 8 miles. That leave 38-40 miles spread over the remaining 5 days. Assuming a minimum distance of 6 miles on any run, that takes you down to an additional 8-10 miles a week. Personally, I would spread those 8-10 miles over the other runs and not double, but I am a old and seasoned. At your age, and with your mileage history I would say that you should probably double, but only twice per week with a morning run of 4-5 miles a couple of days per week. Get there slowly over the course of the summer though. A 50% jump in mileage from 40 to 60 mpw is a pretty decent jump.
