Hello everyone,
I've been training for the 800m race since January, and I've got my time down to 1:57.17 for my junior year, my PR however is 1:57.16 from sophomore year. This is a let down as I've been trying to get my time down to 1:55, and I don't know what the problem is.
My 400m time has decreased however, (a 50.7 split from soph. year to a 49.07 split this year, but I know splits don't mean much)
Early in the season I did mileage (December & January) roughly around 30-35 MPW. Then around February that's when our season started so we got straight to work, and a typical week would look something like this.
Monday - 6 x 100m, 4 x 200m, 2 x 300m, 1 x 400m @ 2:00 pace, the rest being the distance you just ran.
Tuesday - 2 sets of 4 x 200m w/ 1 minute rest between reps, 5 minutes between sets , full recovery, and then a 400m with 150m kick
Wednesday - Distance day, run for 45 minutes to an hour
Thursday - Usually a workout at mile pace just to keep our blood flowing
Friday - Rest
Saturday - Race
Sunday - Rest
*It's not exactly the same like this every week, but typically a week is a pacing day followed by a hard day, mileage, easy day, rest, then race
For the race itself, I can usually get to the 600m mark on pace for a good time, but I can never really finish. Once I hit 1:25 to finish at 1:58. My coach tells me its a lack of strength and I need to do some weight training. This summer season is going alright, I'm constantly hitting 1:58's but no faster. Can anyone offer any advice on improving my time? I have a month of meets left (2 meets, 2 weeks preparation between the two) and I really want to get to 1:55 if not at least 1:56.
Thanks for the replies.
