I've thought about this for a while now.
The Career Galen Rupp has had is undoubtedly better than Pre's. In every category. No matter how you cut it.
Now, obviously Pre's was cut short, but despite not really accomplishing anything, he was a symbol for the entire US-not just runners. Galen has been to a bunch of olympics and won medals, yet the American Public doesn't know about his existence. Only followers of the sport do.
I guess my question just stems out of my brain being confused by the amount of success each had vs how much publicity they generated. Pre was so good for the sport-everybody knew who he was. Not his times or what they meant, but they knew who he was. It seems that to know who Galen is means you also know when he is racing next, what events, and what his PRs are (AKA it's almost a cult thing now). You have to be part of this tiny group to really know much, and it's hard to pull of there in, let alone have them care.
Then there's my own feelings-I just liked Prefontaine more. And I don't really like Rupp as a dude. But I don't know why. COULD YOU IMAGINE ANYONE naming an event like the "Pre Classic" after Rupp? The "Rupp Classic"? No.
Discus.
