Anybody with an ounce of brains runs it East to West to take advantage of the rotation of the earth moving towards them.
You do it West to East so you can use to rotation like a moving sidewalk at the airport.

Direction doesn't matter. Just be sure to start a few steps up a ladder, so that it's a net downhill.
