I likely have a pretty uncommon list of specific needs I would like in a job – it’s my goal to find the best profession that suits most of them. If you guys can give any suggestions that would be great. I have a few tooling around the back of my head but nothing seems to fit that well.
1 – flexibility; This is extremely important to me. I want to be able to work 6-8 months of the year in the US and 4-6 months of the year in another southern hemisphere country (Aus, NZ etc). I realize this in itself is kind of a ridiculous job demand but it’s really important to me. This would be quite tough to do with one employer so a career that will allow me to work multiple contracts would be ideal.
2 – autonomy; not to be confused with flexibility. I HATE micromanagement and someone looking over your shoulder – it’s the bane of my existence. I need a job where you are left to your own devices.
3 – Challenging; ie. Engaging and not boring. I get bored easily with mundane tasks. I feel several outdoor jobs may suit criteria 1 or 2 but likely fail hard on this. Ie. Something like tree planting can contract you all over the world and has great autonomy but is boring as.
4 – creating/building/ongoing learning. I lump these into one. I want a job/career/skillset that I can continually develop and at the same time grow/build/create something I am proud of that gives value to someone else. For example – sales wouldn’t suit this.
5 – salary. This is down the list as it isn’t a big deal to me but I still want it represented. I would say 50k with the ability to grow to 75k or so would be in a good range for me. I don’t need a lot but I need something. Ie. Remove musician/artist from the list.
6 – job demand. Again not that important but it has to have some demand. I don’t want to be a postal worker for instance.
And finally a little about me; I am currently a teacher with a BA. I feel I am very creative (but not at all artsy) with some business acumen. I originally was enrolled in science at university so have a bit of a math/science background but never pursued that past 1st year.
Any other info needed to better offer advice just ask! I am an open book!
