I have made my own observations but would like to hear what people here think and what they have observed. Does knowing someone has an advanced degree of some kind in general affect the way people think of/view them upon first meeting them?

MA...seriously? everyone I know has a MA these days.
PhD...yes...def changes impression.
On letsrun they tend to look down on PhD holders. It's an anti intellectual kitsch, like 10 min/mile hobby joggers looking down on sub elite or elite runners.
Not at all. I've worked with enough people to know that an idiot with a PhD is still an idiot.

Yes it does. They immediately assume you didn't vote for trump. And they would be right.
No - I've met (and interviewed) many PHD/Masters degrees for a tutoring company I own.
I would almost go so far as to say that it's generally a negative (I find they are more likely to be weirdos/ lack people skills etc.)
I feel most PHD's do it to delay having to cope in the real world.

There you go. Didn't take long.
To me it means that they spent their whole adult life in academia living on stipends and are extremely disconnected with the "real world"

Any PhDs/masters grads applying to work at a tutoring company clearly picked a useless subject.
You need to meet someone with a PhD in a real subject.
yeah i think they're total nerds!
oooo
It depends entirely on the field of study. P.h.D. in chemistry (impressed) versus sociology (not impressed).
I have a friend who has one in environmental science. He couldn't find a college teaching position, took a job outside his field that only required a bachelors degree. Yet his email signature prominently displays the title. I get the feeling he doesn't get along with his co-workers. Can't imagine why.

I have a Ph.D. Thanks for completely mischaracterizing every aspect of my life!

What does any of that have to do with his post?

Letsrun is chalk full of liars, and those who misrepresent themselves or the truth in order to fulfill some sort of false socioeconomic cognitive orgasm, so they ask and say absurd things. These questions are way to out them an let them know that we are onto them in a big way. So the questions are actually quite relevant.

Only poor people ask about income. A wealthy person would ask about investable assets.
But I would never ask that question because I don't really think about money. Only a wealthy person can relate to that statement.
I stopped discussing my academic life, except among colleagues, during undergrad.
