Clayton Murphy have a better chance on winning the 800 than the 1500 If he only runs one event. If he try to run both, He will lose both races. He will be tired from the rounds. The 800 is his best shot but the 1500 there is no way he beats Matt. Matt run 50 second last lap to win the Olympics. What is Murphy going to run to beat Matt on a slow race? 49 possible but it is unlikely. Matt is a very good racer and he knows how to position himself in a slow race. I just can not see Mat losing on the 1500 right now may be in couple years.

On that note I think Brazier is a bust. Great athlete. Great time trialer. Just cursed.
Brazier just got 3rd in a Diamond League 800m with NO international racing experience. Not to mention he was closing hard on 2nd place.
I wish I was as big a bust as Brazier.
Most guys here have never even been in a real race. Brazier ran well against a great field.

he's already doing too much.
stick to the 8. and lower your 400m time.
Doesn't he have some 46.X 4x4 splits to his name? That's probably better 400 speed than almost all of the 800/1500 types out there. Brazier certainly has better 400 speed, but I would argue that we should expect that since he's more of a 400/800 guy.
He has 45.4 and 45.6 legs and you can see them on youtube. They've been posted here before.

This is the last season Centro will be able to beat Murphy at the 1500 in a fast or slow race. A slow race against Murphy isn't a lock for Centro either, despite the Olympics. Murphy held off Centro in a kicker's 1000 before Rio last year and Centro was giving it his all. Murphy has better wheels speed wise and will go much farther below 3:30 than Centro is capable of.
That said, running both events probably keeps Murphy from winning either. He'll be tired for the 800 final - provide there isn't some disaster that keeps him from making the final.

Nobody runs under 50 for the last lap.
Murphy is fit af this year ... Earned experience in the NCAA with rounds , then Olympic Bronze just boosted his ego / confidence. That's key to be a fierce competitor. I'm all in with him doubling because at the end of the day he's the best middle distance runner the USA currently has. Would be interesting to see him & Centro in a 1500 WC final. If it's slow then possibly both medal & I really hope Brazier is fit to perform because he can do some damage if he gets his head right. Murphy is the American Makhloufi !
What am I reading on here? You people have gone plum crazy.
I see people saying he might not make either team, he's going to be really tired out, there's no way he'll win either race etc...
Murphy is a very smart racer, you can bet he will use the minimum possible energy through the rounds to prevent being "really tired out"
Who is going to out kick him in a race btw? All this second or third talk and I havent seen anyone say who is going beat him other than Centro in the 1500 because he ran a 50.xx last lap in Rio, Murphy ran the equivalent of back to back 51.5 basically lol.
So for everyone out there, what are your 800m and 1500 predictions?
Murphy will at worst get 2nd in both races. The only 800 guy that could possibly beat him is Brazier, and the only 1500 guy that could beat him is Centro. Brazier beating Murphy is a long shot, but Centro will most likely win the 1500. So I'm predicting Murphy wins the 800 (with Brazier 2nd) and Centro wins the 1500 over Murphy. Something would have to go horribly wrong for him to get 3rd or worse, he's just in a different class the rest of the US.

So did MakDaddy. Actually MakDaddy beat Murphy. MakDaddy lost to Centro too, while he was doubling, just like Murphy is attempting.
800:
Murphy
Brazier
Harris
1500:
Centro
Murphy
Ben Blankenship
I don't think the doubling will make him too fatigued for the 800 final if he gets there.
At that fitness level, any single race doesn't take much out of you. Especially a sit and kick race.
Thursday he has 1 X 800 with three hours rest then 1 X 1500.
And he runs those just hard enough to get through.
That's a real easy Thursday workout for him.
Friday he runs a single 800 semi.
That will be tough. You race for top two, so you have to give it a real effort.
Then he has 18 hours to recover.
Saturday he will be racing a 1500 final against runners who had a day off.
A bit of a disadvantage but I think it won't affect the results much.
Sunday he would have the 800 final against people that just had a day off.
If he is better than the others, I think he wins.
When watching successful doubles from the past, the cumulative races don't seem to have an impact to those that are fit.
Look at Coes's doubles or Makh's doubles or even Michael Johnson doubling back from the 400 and getting a world record in the 200 in his 8th race of the week.
I think that double is harder on the legs.
Aerobically, you recover quickly from an 800 or 1500m race.

Pretty much what I'd say
My point wasn't that he'd outkick or beat centro after the 800, just how stupid it was people think he'd struggle to make the team in either event, people are acting like he's some runner that can barely make either team doing just one event
Murphy bombs the 800 (3rd) after finishing 4th in the 1500m.
Haha

Who?
What on earth makes you think Murphy can run a faster 1500 than Centro, let alone "much farther brow 3:30."
He just doesn't have that talent in the 1500.
He cannot and will not beat Matt at the USATF Nationals. Fact!
Any news on Leo Manzano? Is it over for him? Officially retired? Can't find anything on google. I'm gonna miss the little guy, if its true.
