Finally getting around to taking a closer look at the results from last weekend, and there are some things to note. Occidental came in last this year, second to last the previous year, and didn't qualify the year before that. This is an unprecedented level of sucking, while still making nationals 2/3 years. NYU is in a similar position, though they suck less than oxy, but they didn't qualify in 2015 either. Haverford following a classic up and down of success or a lack thereof, going 12th, 18th, 8th in the last three years. Interestingly, Haverford was 8th scoring runners 2-6 and from his TFRRS page, their 6 had a particularly bad day. NCC's 5th was worse this year than last year, but going 2-3 more than made up for that. NCC's 6th was better last year than this year by 9 places (getting weaker??????).
Geneseo loses 5 of their top 7, so expect them to go back to their normal, non IGC levels of sucking.
It looks like from their previous results Haverford lost a guy who was running anywhere from 1-5 for them, but your point is valid it looks like Haverford is returning most of a really good team. They should be a top 3 contender without any of their guys improving.
You must be some bum who didn’t make the meet. Yes Haverford has an off day all around similar to Geneseo in 2016, but that happens at Nationals. They also had a usual scorer DNF, impacted where they finish.
NCC possibly getting worse?? They just repeated one of the better team races in NCC history. Can I remind you they went 2,3,8,17 and all those guys return! Yes their 5th was worse this year but it’s not every year you get 5 All-Americans. Not to mention their 7 this year was Zach Hird-24th place in 2016 so 2018 will return 5 All-Americans for them.
Geneseo does also lose big but seem to be a perennial contender. I’d imagine their recruiting class and coaches will take them back to the National meet.
Occidental made it last year because they beat Pomona-Pitzer (a top-10 ranked team all year) at Regionals, so if Pomona was going to go, Oxy had to go. Occidental was without their number 2 from the entire year due to injury at nationals this year. Oxy was ranked in the top 20 all year and beat 4-5 other at large teams at Prenationals. It's not like there's 0 explanation for them getting in, although if you only look at Nationals results it might seem that way.
3 of the 4 West teams finished in the last 7 teams of the meet, its clear this region is getting way too many bids for the national meet.
