Typical New York City training venue.
For some reason, we trained on one of these for my first year of high school indoor track. Then we got a new distance coach who actually knew what he was doing and we started training outside all year long. I realized pretty quickly that training on the jogging track really just didn't make any sense. Even here in the northeast, the weather is almost never so bad as to completely preclude outdoor running. For repeat workouts, a cleared bike path or even a loop around low-traffic streets is way better than having to make a 90 degree turn every ten seconds.

Brooklyn Tech had a Minuteman board with the names of boys who ran sub 60 for 440yds on it. Since OP mentioned it I assume that type list was common to all schools .
Wineturtle were you a minuteman? Lenny Malech told me that if you could break 60 on that track you were ready for 50 in the armory- the old armory.

Maybe the old coach new what he was doing but the A.D. didn't trust him to take the boys outside. There may have been something else going on.
