If you got a lemon, the good news is they will be replaced.

At least the medals have lasted longer than most of the stadiums for events.
Wow, talk about an apt metaphor for the Rio Olympics.
There you go benevolent dictators taking our thunder. Give us a chance to break into your top ten on the message board!

What do you expect, you give the Olympics to hokey, 3rd world Marxists, you get junk. The Paralympics management was a disgrace.

Makes sense to have faulty medals. Give those out to the suspected drug cheats that way when they return the faulty medal for a replacement you can pass the colors down to the clean athletes.
Umm, isn't the intelligent thing to just melt them down and sell it anyway?

Umm, the "gold" medals are 99% silver.

Rio was the worst Olympics since Atlanta. The whole swimmer controversy and shake-down after was pretty funny. This medal flaking is fitting.
Would you really send them back though? I wouldn't trust these clowns to give yours back. Also, wouldn't the original flakey medal be worth something collector-wise?
Probably smelt from the same slag as that Derek Jeter number retirement plaque . He looks like a shorn Andre the Giant wearing a Yankee cap

It's part of the design.
By the time the athlete fails the drug test the medal is meant to have fallen apart.

Poor effort.
Why aren't there any pictures of these defective medals?

Because the "defective" ones were mishandled and dropped, or seemingly stored in a refrigerator. The Gold medals are not pure gold: foolish athletes.
“The most common issue is that they were dropped or mishandled and the varnish has come off and they’ve rusted or gone black in the spot where they were damaged,†Andrada said.
“The second thing is that a small few, about 10, had problems with the extreme cold.â€
http://www.kualalumpurpost.net/olympics-more-than-100-rusted-or-defective-medals-returned/Looks like it was the usage of recycled materials for "sustainability" (well, maybe of the other 93-94%?).
http://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1050567/rio-2016-admit-some-olympic-and-paralympic-medals-are-disintegratingSilver medals have seemingly been hardest hit because they were made with 30 per cent recycled materials as part of a sustainability drive.
