Agreed. It's frustrating seeing guys who graduated in 2013 running as freshmen
Here are the guys from BYU who qualified to nationals, their rank, and the year they graduated H.S. As a reference, Ed Ches graduated HS in 2013 and did not take a red-shirt year.
Chase Horrocks 1500m (no 9) HS grad. 2010
Talem Franco 1500m (no.31) HS. grad 2013
Kramer Morton 1500 (no. 33) HS grad 2014
Clayton Young 10k & 5k (no. 17 & No. 3) HS grad 2012
Danny Carney 3KS 5K (No. 8 & No. 40) HS grad 2012
Mitchell Briggs 3KS 5K (No. 18 & No. 48) HS grad 2010
Rory Linkletter 10k (no. 12) HS. grad 2014
Jon. Harper (no. 15) HS. grad 2013
Clayson Shumway 3KS (no. 7) HS. grad 2014
Jacob Heslington 3KS (No. 17) HS. grad 2013
Porter Reddish 3KS (no. 43) HS grad 2013
It looks like if NONE of these guys had chosen to take two compete years off of running to serve a mission, NOT TO TRAIN, that only 2 people would be out of eligibility--which is still more than any other team.
