cuz they're ridiculously heavy to be racing in.

the giraffe joke is beautiful but I sadly feel the urgency to explain it because there are massive number of people who actually believe that to this very day in this country and will argue with you, sometimes vehemently, sometimes violently
it's of course because the shorter giraffes that cannot reach the tall trees end up eating less or not at all and die off or do not reproduce so you instead end up with tall giraffe genetics over many many generations
seems obvious when said but teaching it could get you prison until 1915, probably severe punishment to this day if you are in a religious cult like LDS
Do you know what an Okapi is? Short necked Giraffes neither starved nor failed to reproduce.
How the heck do you keep them on? They fall off my feet just walking around the house!
Sorry I'm trying to delete this

If you can run fast enough, the wind speed will adhere the shoe to your foot. Similar to how an F1 car is glued to the track at high speeds.
The more you know!

Shame! Shame!!!
Have you ever run in the NCAAs?
This list is for real:
If someone has dark skin and converts to Mormonism, the skin will begin to lighten/whiten.
The Garden of Eden was in Missouri when Adam and Eve were kicked out.
Satan has power over the oceans, lakes and rivers which is why LDS Missionaries are not allowed to swim.
Dinosaur bones came from other planets.
Love isn't as strong between couples and families who are not LDS.

To answer point by point:
Michael Jackson converted to Mormonism.
Visit St.Louis now and tell me that's not the devils workshop with its drugs and murders.
There was a spate of Missionaries drowning, hence the need to forbid it, but there's a public pool in Provo campus.
There's no link between dinosaurs and critters walking around today.
Finally, a Moron divorce rate is low single digits while America in general, over 50%.
Their is a link to Birds.
There. Damned "auto select"

fdfsdf wrote:Sasha, weren't you all using Walmart's off-brand crocs for a long time? Something like $8 a pair, IIRC. 2000 miles for $8.
Walmart $8 variant lasted me around 500 miles or so. Official Croc brand has a thicker/more durable sole and can often go 2000+ miles. In a few odd cases, the strap broke at around 1000 miles, that was a bummer. I actually have a log of how far each went.

To be forthright, I started this race in the same corral, and saw the two of you, and didn't expect great results based on the footwear I saw...and I couldn't have been more wrong.
I'm genuinely curious though, at Benjamin's current age, has he run in any other footwear for comparison's sake? He's clearly a talented runner, and I'd be curious whether or not the choice of Crocs for shoes is hindering him or not.

Um, ever hear of Joseph Smith?
1. Michael Jackson had vitiligo and used a skin cream skin cream probably Benoquin.
2. St Louis as the Devil's workshop? You're deranged.
3. Perhaps your missionaries should have learned to swim at the YMCA.
4. Your dinosaur narrative is beyond ridiculous.
5. Perhaps you do have a low Moron divorce rate.

He has run a few cross-country races wearing spikes. Those are hard to judge due to course variability, but here is the best we've got:
November 2015, 5 K, Kiwani's Park, Provo, Utah - 17:00. Riley Cook won with 16:14. Even though he and Riley never raced each other in a 5 K around that time, the gap was more or less what I would have expected.
November 2016, 5 K, same place - 16:32. No good consistent runners to compare against in the 5 K, but assuming 4 K was really 80% of the 5 K, we have Grace Ping who ran 4 K in 14:12 on the same day.
If you want to go back to the age of 14, which I think would give Benjamin more of an advantage relative to peers - most of his growth spurt took place between 12 and 14, plus he was better aerobically conditioned than his peers due to his training relative to theirs. So November 2013, Kiwani's Park, 4 K: Benjamin 14:10, Brodey Hasty 13:40, Joe Benson 13:48.
As you see, giving him spikes does not make him the beast some posters have imagined he would be. Based on what I have observed training with him I believe he runs to his potential in Crocs, if he wore "real shoes" he would not be any faster.
Really interesting. Thx for sharing.

Crocs are not heavy. They're all foam. They weigh about as much as typical racing shoes. They are definitely lighter than typical trainers. Some of the Croc knock offs are even lighter.
I'm not a Crocs owner, but I've tried them and can see them being fine for running. My GF like them, and sometimes runs in them when dog walking. She only has problems running in her old ones because the dogs chewed off the heel strap thing. They are not too minimalistic. If they don't feel like they are going to fall off your particular feet, and conditions are such where they can get sufficient grip, I don't think they would much cost time in a race.
