What's the deal with the other clown Chris Mocko? He's so overrated.

i think he quit his job so he could focus on DNFing.
Now that a few big ultra races like WS100 and North Face are doing actual drug testing, some 'elites' have to start their taper extra early.

Is this the first race where he was subject to drugs testing? Has he ever been tested before?
Unlike Jim, Mocko toughed it out and actually finished. Chris also runs road marathons where there is testing. He is a low 2:20s runner and ran Div. I at Stanford.

You're correct. and I do respect the finish despite a rough day.
Last year he did a post-race interview despite the fiasco. This year, deafening silence. A very dark place for JW. Part of me hopes he's OK, but another part sees this as comeuppance for his hubris. I would like to see him do a sane pace at UTMB and top 10 there, learn his craft at the highest level.
This is a pretty interesting assessment of the situation http://filmmyrun.com/walmsley-blows-western-states-100-2017/
This may seem a bit prude, but pounding a beer — or beers? — within 12-36 hours before a huge race is (1) a tad brazen and shows a degree of hubris and (2) arguably stupid for a skinny, well-trained athlete who has been thru massive heat training and is about to go into a 100 mile cauldron. This interview reminded me of Mr. Powell’s interview of Mr. Wilkins before Hardrock. It felt disrespectful — part of a lack of focus in favor of shits and giggles. The results showed. I am not sure what it says to younger, impressionable athletes either. Beer and other alcohol are better reserved for post-race, off camera. Stay strong, all.
No.

I completely agree.
If I'm not mistaken Mr. Wilkens (AJW) went into Hardrock last year after coming off major hip surgery in late 2015 (I think). His falling apart had more to do with the course than the fact he wasn't focused and prepared. Anyone who has ever met AJW knows he loves to drink a good beer and is almost always in a good mood, laughing and joking around.
Walmsley is really good at running fast in training. And showing off in training. Watch these embarrassing videos of him flying by people running regular long run pace during the Western States camp. Everyone else is running easy and he's trying to show them up by racing it. Sad! And Jamil Coury thought this was exciting enough footage to put on this youtube channel. Sad!

Really? Blaming the Secretary of the Air Force for his discharge is owning up to his mistakes? Claiming he was "technically" honorably discharged when he wasn't, is owning up to his mistakes? The numerous excuses surrounding his DUI, is owning up to his mistakes? Heck, it took him a year in the spotlight to even address the subject of why he didn't complete his AF obligation. Based on the timing, it is very likely only at his sponsors' urging and with their assistance on the PR spin.
I guess some people have lower expectations for what constitutes taking responsibility and owning up to your mistakes.

thanks the opinion, Mr. Rectitude.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSbPqin3L6EI would contend that pre-race beers are symptom of a larger problem: lack of discipline. A bad hip is also the result of a lack of discipline -- lack of mobility training, overtraining, and crap lifestyle. I preach to guys all day long to be disciplined in all areas. Few listen. Lots of "mystery" injuries and ailments and then, boom -- game over and living on memories. It needn't be.
With these videos, JW officially goes from Dick to A Hole status. Karma is a large female dog which will take a chunk out of your Asss.

This was fun. Now there is nothing to do until next year when he tries again.
This is why Jim DNF'ed, imho. Going backward from his day at Western States to 8 days out:
WS 100: heart rate consistently in the 160s-170s. Threw down some seriously fast miles early on, as fast as 6:02. Essentially did intervals for 60 miles. With the heat, no wonder he crashed so spectacularly.
He paid lip service to tapering. He 'tapered' the last week with four mile runs on W/Th/F. He did Camelback mountain 4 days before on Monday (1.2 mi, 1300' climb) at 120 degrees. I was there when he was there. It was an oven.
5 days out he does an Echo/Cholla yo yo on Camelback at quite an insane pace in 117 degree heat. 3000 ' climbing in 4.5 mi. Averaged 162 bpm, heart rate got up into 180s. Quite stressful on system both with pace and heat.
6 days out does a 14 mile run in 115 degree heat at 6:17 pace. Heart rate got into 170s, averaged 156.
7 days out does a 'jog' up Squaw Peak (1.1 mi, 1200' climb) at 109 degrees at an insanely fast pace. 14 min to top, 25 min round trip. Earlier that day did a 9.5 mile loop in McDowells, 2000' climbing at 10 AM at quite an insane pace. 159 avg, got up into 180s.
8 days out, mile intervals on track in the heat. 14 miles total.
So his 'taper' involved virtually ALL anaerobic running, in extreme heat. So stressful on the body no matter your age. AND he was drinking beer and probably eating like shit. Not a smart taper IMHO.
Analysis of his daily training prior to those 8 days showed a LOT of anaerobic running. There was no aerobic base building period dating back to 2015. Lots and lots of interval training and racing with virtually no down time. Combine all that with his diet of eat whatever you want including lots of sugar and garbage. NOT surprising that he blew up. Honestly, I can't believe he went as long as he did. This could be another Geoff Roes in the making.
WOW! Did Geoff Roes drink alot too? Did he eat alot of junk food as well?
Good analysis.Talented head case. Dime a dozen.Strava is like heroin for an attention hore like Walmsley. Inevitable overdose.
