Yes: The first Sub 2 = A lasting Meme = PR = Money.
And it will work if they go sub 2. It will work as a meme, even more so if they manage to do it on the same date as Bannister run sub 4 for the mile. Legit or not doesn't matter at all, you'll be forced to have an opinion, you won't be able to avoid the meme. Remember that MANY people argued the wind aided down course 2:03:02 in Boston was the REAL world record simply because at the time it was the fastest time run over the distance.

changing the rules wrote:I beat Michael Jordan in a game of one-on-one basketball. But first I changed the rules so he had his hands tied behind his back and could only hop on one leg.
So what are the specific rule changes that everyone is bent out of shape about.
Which changes will actually make a difference?
Lotta people saying this attempt is not legit, not a lotta people backing it up.
I know it won't count for record setting purposes, but what "illegal" elements are actually going to make Kipchoge run faster than he ordinarily would?
It isn't downhill, they aren't creating a tailwind, he isn't riding a bike. Is it the pacers? If so, who cares.
Bekele got whupped.
Embarrassed.
And he was going all out.
The top two Boston guys ran better races.

So do I. If it succeeds, it will forever take away from the excitement and accomplishment of the first sub-2 under record-eligible conditions. And it seems that the only reason for the project is to hawk some new shoe models.
Nike is no longer the company that I remember from its early days. But maybe it never was.
This needs repeating.
It's like someone running a sub-2 marathon downhill. Later, when sub-2 eventually happens in real conditions in an authentic race on a record-eligible course, you can no longer refer to it in the simplest terms as "the first man to run under 2 hours." It will have to be qualified and explained to delimit out the previous downhill guy. Well, someone else did it, but that doesn't count because yada yada yada.
That was the beauty of Roger Bannister's sub-4. It didn't need to be qualified.
