Destroyed the competition on what looked like a hot day, splits were 58, 1:59, 3:02, 4:01. With the pacer gone he had absolutely no competition, definitely could get closer to sub 4 in a closer race.

it was 82 deg. very hot and even some moderate winds. He definitely has the ability to go sub-4. The only question is if he races the full mile again this season.
I'd say its a better performance than his 4:00.16 considering the heat
It was pretty windy in his 4:00.16 too, he's doing the brooks mile I know, I'd love to see him at like Pre though I think he could go 3:58.xx
Be a high school kid, have fun with it.
Don't chase times. State is 5 weeks away in California. Go home train, win state in the 3200 if you can ( got an 8;45 guy not chasing times waiting for ya ), and then show up at Brooks

what if, chasing times IS fun??? *insert thinking face emoji*
If he were a machine, your strategy would be perfect.
He has nothing to gain from running the CA state meet, let alone doubling there.
Austin Tamagno skipped state to try to break 4 at Pre, Failed, still chasing it...
Tamagno ran a 3:41.33 1500 at the Bryan Clay Invitational a couple of weeks ago. Not sub-4 yet, of course, but it seems that barring N. Korea nuking the West Coast, his training has set him up nicely to attain that huge personal milestone. "All in due course" is probably the matra Andy Powell has him repeat, along with 400s.
That 1500 converts to a 3:58.97 mile using MileStat's converter. Using MileStat's converter.
So what you are saying is he still has not run a sub 4 minute mile in a race.

Nope, nothing to gain at all- just 2 CS state championships. I have a strong feeling from yiur cavalier attitude that you've never won a state championship- CA or otherwise.
82 is not hot for a mile.

Right, why join a hs team at all? Just run attached for all high school kids, clearly preferable to being part of the system.

Running sub 4...winning states...wonder which of those is worth being cavalier about in that perspective. How many people can say they've won state in a track and field event in the US in the last 63 years? 100's of thousands? How many sub 4?

It's hard to for me to comment on which was better as I saw this meet, and not the prior. That said, I was VERY impressed with this performance - as if 4:01 doesn't say enough. His pacer went berserk on lap one, having already gapped Cooper in the first turn (Cooper was probably 57 low at 440 and not even on his heels). They calmed down and hit 880 in 1:59 as planned, but not the way you want to do it. After hitting 3/4 in 3:02 Cooper really fought hard on the final lap, but just didn't have enough in the tank.
What a treat to watch this kid run, and furthermore to see how he carries himself among his competitors and spectators.
What wasn't mentioned was this was a quality field which he just annihilated from the gun. I would love to see what he would do in a well paced college/pro race.

Teare has already won a state championship, he has beaten Bolger and all the other top CA kids multiple times so he has nothing left to prove there. His team is not a factor in scoring.
OTOH, sub-4 is still an incredible accomplishment for a high school runner - especially at age 17.
Why not try and achieve something only a handful of high school athletes have ever accomplished? Teare is better than Tamagno and a sub-4 would be the crowing achievement of an amazing senior track season.
''crowning achievement"

I agree with you. I did not start running my best in that event until it got to be 75. Humidity would matter though.
He is not running Pre
Thanks for the links, including the video. Cooper Teare's priorities, then, are set -- his state meet, which unfortunately conflicts with the Pre Classic. Now I remember, last year Tamagno was criticized for entering the Pre Classic for a shot at going sub-4 instead of running in the Cal State Meet.
