To be fair, it's probably because advanced sentient beings were not meant to -- slug out 40+ hour weeks in artificial lighting and no natural energy. Fresh air, long views, rustling wind, bugs, birds, plants, grass, forests, rivers.

Former Yes-Man
So you hated the boss when you were an employee and now you hate the employees as a boss. Ever think maybe you are just a miserable person?

Back in the good old days of living and working outside, pretty much everyone was dead by 45, so ...

I'm Not Sure if it was a good trade off

Full happy life and dead at 45 or empty meaningless and dead at 80? Meh.
Sincerely,
Leaning towards 45. Probably.
I'm 45 and working outside. I guess this is my last year.

We're no longer "back in the good old days."
We have things like electricity, cheap consumer products, modern medicine and telecommunications. There's a new tradeoff.
Sincerely,
Gladly swap my desk job for financial freedom

Companies don't care for their employees anymore. It's all about the bottom line for the next 3 months. Goodbye pensions and lifetime employment. We are expendable.
But when you are feeling sad you can always think about cats and the second amendment.

It has nothing to do with the work environment. I own a business that requires physical work outside. As I get older it gets more and more difficult to do the work myself out in the wonderful fresh air.
I can not find anyone who doesn't have an arrest record or is not on drugs that actually wants to work. I've given up trying, so I do all of the work myself. I'm making bank because nobody can find anyone else willing to do what I do and I turn over the work because I'm not going on coffee breaks all day.
When my generation is too old to work anymore you guys are doomed because none of you have any skills.

You shouldn't just automatically disqualify people with a police record. I've worked with a number of people that have criminal records and, while many of them are indeed stupid and lazy, some are really good workers and will do well.
For the original post, there are definitely some managers (particularly in retail and other service sector places) that have to deal with unmotivated, apathetic employees everyday.
Usually the best managers worked for good managers and so on and so on. They pass down what they learn to their employees.
Sadly it seems that you haven't worked for good managers.
I suggest that you focus on learning about what it takes to be a good manager. Otherwise you will be miserable and so will your direct reports. Most people want to work and do a good job
Good luck and congratulations on your promotion.

I'd be willing to bet that whatever caused people to die at 45 also prevented the from having a "full happy" life. Why do you think people were dying so young?
Did you ever consider that no one wants to work for you because you pay shit wages? The entitlement of employers these days is mind-blowing! They expect people to be 15 minutes early, leave late, work hard, do work outside of the agreed contract, and grovel in appreciation for the job. They expect all of this for a wage that is far below fair skill compensation and leaves the employee in a financially risky position. The entitled greed of your generation has been destroying the economy for decades.
I can't wait for your generation to leave the workforce so wages can return to livable levels for people who are working.
Hmm...there's no such thing as bad employees, just bad managers. Really, you need to look in a mirror. If you were effective in your role, the people you supervise would likely suck less.
Rather than come and bitch anonymously on here, get a grip of this now before your superiors call you out for failing to lead your team.

While I agree that bad managers can make bad employees, there are definitely people who are just awful workers/employees. You know, the people you see at your job or in your office, and "you're like how the f--- did they even get this job?"
I've worked with totally lazy and incompetent retards and even the best manager in the world probably couldn't have helped them out.
Well said...
