Obviously there are a million reasons not to believe the 2-hour mark will be broken in Nike's event next week, but if you need one more bit of proof, look to the lack of promotion of the event, which is now less than two weeks away.
When Nike initially announced this race against time, my thought was that they would use it to get as many eyes as humanly possible on the Nike brand and these new magical shoes. And why wouldn't they? They've already invested a healthy sum of money to get the runners on board and taken care of, so why not capitalize on that investment by staging the biggest, most over-the-top event possible?
Something is seriously up, though, because this event has been kept under the radar in a way that is truly baffling. Other than a few small PR releases, I haven't seen anything promoting this event. And I still don't know how or when to watch it. All I know is that it's taking place sometime next weekend and that it will be live streamed somewhere.
I wonder if Kipchoge is hurt or finally starting to show his age (he's likely 40), and the guys will all end up between 2:03-2:09, which would be really embarrassing for Nike. All of that special training, those super high-tech new shoes, and not even a world record in perfect conditions? Nike would have some serious rebuilding to do.
