They've popped up in the last few years and they are EVERYWHERE.
Rarely see anyone in them. The lighting looks reminiscent of prison. This is a front, right?

They bought out Sleepy's a year and a half ago. So they had a lot of stores, and then they added more.
I'm in the hunt to buy a new mattress, doing my homework and pricing beforehand, and Mattress Firm seemed fine. Just another chain retail store.
I have been telling my girlfriend this exact thing for the past three years.
They are showing up everywhere. Who buys a mattress more than once every 4-5 years at most? And, of those people, how many are really buying at a place like that. I was driving in Durham recently and waiting at a light and there were TWO Mattress Firms at opposite corners of the intersection. Not even a case of one just being a sign or an old store front, but literally two full Mattress Firms with staff and customers inside of each.

Brah I do not recall ever seeing this many mattress stores - not even close - that I'm seeing with this Mattress Firm enterprise. Like 5 years ago mattress stores were few and far between and now there are like 5 mattress firms on my block
Same in Boise. Mattress Firm bought out a local chain, and at one location they are right next to each other. Of course there are plenty of business hemoraging $Billions and few are aware or concerned. Tesla, Netflix, Sears, and JC Penny to name a few.
"My Pillow" is def a cover for something.
Freakanomics, Radiolab or somebody did a podcast on why mattress places all congregate in the same area recently. Can't remember why, but there was a marketing or aqusition reason.
When I worked in real estate, I did a lot of house closings for mattress salesmen. At that time a 1/2 decent one could make $85K
I bought a mattress at Mattress Firm last year. I saved up my money and initially went to a big local furniture seller. The mattress area was in the back, lights low and about 10 salespeople.
I looked around and in about 20 seconds was approached by a sales person. Told him I just wanted to wander around and look for a little while. Less than a minute after he walked off, another sales person who saw the exchange came up to "help." Told him the same thing.
The cycle repeated a couple minutes later with a 3rd coming up about 2 minutes later.
In less than 5 minutes I had done no real mattress looking and been approached by 3 sales people.
I was going to buy a mattress.
I ended up just walking out and going to mattress firm. I person was in the store. He said the mattresses were color coded based on firmness (red, yellow and green) and said if I wanted anything he would be "over there." He then went to a computer where he looked at Facebook.

I completely understand how and why places like MF are growing. I would never go back to the other store.

Sounds like my kind of store. The mattress buyouts are awesome.
For years we had "it's not too late to sleep like a baby", over and over on the radio. I wanted to punch the radio. I vowed never to buy a mattress from those guys. My friends said the same thing. They eventually failed and went of business.
We also had "Why buy a mattress anywhere else? DING!" over and over again. Not buying from these guys. It worked. Sleep Train bought Sleep Country.
But Sleep Train had bad commercials too, though nothing as annoying as Sleep Country.
Now Mattress Firm buys Sleep Train? I haven't heard a single annoying Mattress Firm ad. I hope they stay in business and buy out all the other annoying places. No hassle shopping? I'm in, but if they start annoying radio jingles, I'm out.

Check out the Dream Cell mattresses from Reverie. We just bought one and are waiting for it to show up. It is made up of latex cylinders of differing firmness which can be moved around to match what you need. It is completely modular and all the pieces can be replaced individually. Cool stuff. Not cheap though.
Be wary of the memory foam mattresses. Read up on that before buying it.
