I like to think i know a good bit about running but some of the beasts sometimes slip through the cracks. When I got home I was reading about Benji and wow! I'm pretty sure he must be one of the only Americans ever to have a breakthrough in the marathon the way that he did. He went from a 2:36 Marathon in 1975 to a 2:20 Marathon in 1976 through a progression of marathons he eventually won the OT's in 2:11 and ran a Career PR in Boston in 2:09.
Seriously a 2:36 marathoner to a 2:09 and his PR was set in Boston. (Yeah i'm talking to all you dudes who say Boston isn't a PR course!)
