On the track, BEKELE was a model of fluidity and efficiency. Now he looks like a hobbyjogger with such a grotesque heel strike. No wonder he couldn't catch Wanjiru.
Biomechanics experts: what happened??

My theory: Over the years, I get Achilles strains. I have never suffered them while only running distance (10 to 15) miles. I never suffered Achilles strains from only sprinting. I suffer Achilles strains from doing both in the same week. Bekele has had Achilles strain issues. When running through mild Achilles strains, I shorten my stride and heel strike. When I sprint with Achilles strains, I sprint more like Michael Johnson than Carl Lewis. I believe Bekele is protecting his Achilles the way he runs now.

"When you run on the track you run with half foot. Running on the road is full foot. Also, you use different shoes and different style. It's really different than track. More difficult, yes."
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/reuters/article-4437586/Athletics-Bekele-hampered-shoes-London-defeat.html"I used new shoes. When I was between 15km and 20km, the shoes started blistering my foot. My foot was not in a good position because of the shoes," Bekele told reporters.
“I changed the style to protect my foot more. It was difficult and changing the style affected my balance.
I don't understand why they try new things on the race. This is unprofessional. They should race with shoes that they know and trust and have trained with during the preparations.

Agreed, but I still love Bekele. Wasn't there a scene in the movie "Prefontaine" where his feet were bloody after racing in brand new shoes?
Rubbish he was still landing on balls of feet just cadence slower. The commentators even mentioned this.

His foot strike isn't exactly the same as it was on the track, and even different from the great north run 2013 where his foot strike was similar to the track. He does look like landing more dorsiflexed on the heels. I don't understand why. But the rest of his technique looks the same. Very high back kick sole facing the sky, very long strides. Wierd.
Also on the track he used to get his leg full extended. It's just the foot strike that seems different.
Why would he use the exact same range of motion and footplant when he's going way slower?
You're one of the most decorated distance athletes of all time and hold multiple WRs and you wear new shoes to run a marathon? You deserve to lose. We wonder why he was left off the Olympic team?
He has very big thighs, heel strike uses thighs more, he's just utilising that.
Relax, he hasn't fallen to the level of heel strikers. Bekele has had years of calf issues and has had to change from being a very obvious forefoot striker to a midfoot striker. Here is a video of him in slow motion:

Not quite heel striking

Your post is 100 percent incorrect. He strike is more forefoot/midfoot.

He is starting to sound like Geb at the end of his career. Always new excuses.
Remember when Geb blamed his hotel pillow?
His form was terrible, especially when he bonked. Watch the Great Irish Run videos online. Way different form. So smooth. He was flailing today. Pumping his arms like crazy, but going nowhere. I didn't notice heel striking, but he was not running like before.

^THIS^
So. Much. This.
Dibaba is doing it wrong! With a heel strike Tirunesh would have destroyed Keitany!

It happened in both "prefontaine" and "without limits." In both movies, it was from injuring had foot and then racing on it. In one without limits, it was from a sex accident and in prefontaine, it was from hitting it while jumping in to the pool. He then got stitches and then raced on it. In neither movie did they attribute it to new shoes. I have no idea what the real story is.
So the GOAT can run 2:05 as a fat hobbyjogger. Inspiring for all of those on the couch right now.

Foot caught an exposed screw that was sticking up from pool decking.

Because of the heel lifts in the road racing shoes.
Good track shoes don't have heel lifts.
Almost all road racing shoes have heel lifts, which destroy speed and cause injuries.
