Best workout is Marty Liquori's secret weapon - rest
Warm-up, and then run 8-10 200s fast, with the recovery on the athlete. Rest of the week should just be maintenance with perhaps some decent strides day before. Not much you're gonna do that week to help, mostly hurt. If athlete is mental-midget, perhaps something tied into pace so that they feel they are "there", but I've liked the 200s with my 1600 and 3200 runners.
Thanks for your input. The 200's were one of the workouts I was thinking of. The other was some sort of short set of race pace intervals with full recovery.
