For at least 20 years, I have made slowing the aging process a priority in my life. My premise was that if I lacked the talent of my competitors, I could eventually catch them by aging slower. As I approach 70, I'm more competitive at the national level than ever.
Older runners need to be very proactive in treating/preventing injuries and open to new/alternative therapies. I was told by two doctors at the Mayo Clinic that I could never run again. That was 15,000 miles ago. Never give up just because a doc can't cure it with a knife. Find out the state of the art or promising alternative therapy and give it a try.
In my opinion, nutrition, weight lifting, and running are keys to slowing aging. Weight lifting naturally boosts testosterone, but it is the part that many of my running peers neglect. My goal for 2017 is to lift four million pounds. Sounds like a lot, but it really isn't when you lift every day. Although all my lifting is geared to support running, I lift so much it is detrimental to my running in the short term, but it will pay dividends by the time I'm racing at ages 80 and 90.
