He should go for the 400 hurdles world record next. Same distance as his best event, just needs to jump over some stuff. How hard could it be?

He took down Johnson's 400 record I wouldn't be shocked if he runs faster than Johnson's 200. But no way will he break Bolt' s records.
I would he's still miles off Johnsons time
Do PED's work on South Africans?
Bring him in US or EU so that he can be tested all year long - then we will see what will happend.
Very slim shot at 200, no shot at 100 imo. I'm happy to watch him try though.
Did you see his 400m in Rio?
He split 20 low at the 200m and 31.0 at the 300m
He definitely has a better shot at the 200m record, not the 800m. No 400m runner, who also runs 9.9 in the 100m, would even touch sub 1:50 based on the implicative energy distributions.
Typical of LR posters to say "oh, they ran fast at this distance, they should move a distance up"
Distances runners typically talk out their arse about sprints.
His ability to hits Bolt's records hinge on one thing and one thing only, his maximum sustained velocity. Wade and Bolt both have a faster max velocity than anyone else in history. Bolt's coach knows this and he would know better than all the posters on Letsrun.
He will have to work on his acceleration, but the key component is already there. I see him breaking the 200 record if he can remain healthy.
Remember people, Bolt specifically trained for the 200/400 before his break out season in the 100. 1 year later and the record was 9.58, although he definitely could have ran faster than 9.69 in '08 season.
So it is possible for him to own all three. We would all agree that if Bolt wanted to have the 400 record, it would be his. He just chose not to put his efforts into that race.

The rationale for all of this is quite simple. As far back as grade school, Niekerk was never a 100m sprinter. No body chooses the 400m, you run the 400m because you are better at it than the 100/200. If he had WR potential in the 100 or 200,. that's what he would have been focusing on years ago. There is no way he is going to get significantly better in the 100m unless he gives up the 400; there is a reason why there isn't one world class track & field athlete who compete equally successful in more than 2 events.
What about Allyson Felix, for a world class track athlete who compete successfully in 100, 200, and 400?
Is she not a perennial star on the US 4x100 *and* 4x400 teams?
But, I don't actually dispute your point; she is more an exception who proves the rule, methinks.
TrackCoach said "equally successful in more than 2 events." Felix is obviously successful at 3 events, but she is not equally successful at all 3. She is not the exception that proves the rule - she is an example of the rule itself.
If I recall from some interview, Bolt said he didn't want to do the 400 because the training was hard. Didn't he have to run 10.3 or somethig to get his coach to allow him to run the 100? (Note: that number could be way off but it was something decent for his age and training) I would say that bolt could have gotten the 400 record, and WVN can get the 200 record.

Source? Especially for Wayde
Time for a new protected heir to the sprinting throne, I suppose? Black man raised in apartheid SA...coached by elderly white woman. Just enough of s feel good story to look the other way.
SA is not native Black. Bushmen are the natives. Then came the Dutch would took over the lands from the natives--very American. Blacks and Indians moved there mostly for the work. Black currently make up 2/3rds of the population.
based on what?!you think he can become the best 800m runner in the history of mankind, just because...you think that he can?!yet he's a sprinter who can run under 10 and 20 and you've never watched him workout, don't know how much he trains. you don't know anything about him as an athlete. you don't even know if he used PEDs to get to his 400m WRassuming he is capable of running the 800m WR, he'd have to find the right coach and give up all of his successes at 100m, 200m, and 400m to get there because you don't run low 43's and low 1:40's on the same trainingcool.you are not very bright

He won't ever touch 9.58. 19.19 is hardly possible for him... I'd see an 800m WR easier for him than Bolt's records.
No chance at either, but can't blame him for setting his goals high.
if a new nervous system IGf-1 lr3 type peptide hits scene then maybe .
otherwise no , bolt and many other athletes since igf-1 hit scene
have all been successful due to added benefit get from
longger legs /stride length and upping nervous system.
look at recent successful Tall kenya 400mh athletes ,came from nowhere
works and works well but has limits for more average height
and ironic that before this stuff , they were the ideal height .
he does not have this,
and upping speed endurance by doping dont think work either for 200m
as already way up there and well aided by epo and testosterone
and carte blanche to dope ,.
south african track could be rivaling kenya for dirtiest country soon
and with wayde for sure., very marketable .

"Raised in apartheid"? He was born in 1992...
nah, abdul hakim sami brown wont take down bolts records, and neither will van niekerk.they wont even come close.the young japanese guy has already had injuries.he was promising two years ago,but been injured, ever since.

Sani Brown is just 18. He was injured ONCE in 2016. Look for him to make significant improvements in his times this year going forward. He's certainly the future of the 100m. Bookmark it.
Underestimate Van Niekerk at your own peril.
he ran 43.03 after rounds, so, fatigued for it
the "mathematical equivalent" i get for his 200 is
19.26
the 100 is usually 1/2 of 200 ->
9.63
he can run 100/200 as he started off as that
in rio, in a 1-off like zurich, i reckon he was in ~
19.3-flat
9.7-low
definitely couda won 200 & 50/50 for the 100
i do see him running in the 19.1s if he concentrated fully on the 200 & off that he definitely woud get into the 9.6s, but 9.57 woud need a full 2.0m/s, so possible, perhaps odds of 25 / 75
You realize,of course, 100/200 and 400 are very different events, so mathematical conversion doesn't quite work here, right?
they work for his mythical world...i mean come on in vents world jim ryun ran 1:39, and 3:24.
so crazy between vent and retardos land of bull$hit...in one world jim ryun runs faster than the greatest kenyan of all time CLEAN, but like that matters cause in the other world PEDs dont work on the elites.
yes after seeing VN do the 300 and crush merrit i new he had a very very very high chance of doing the WR in the 400m, not only did he crush the record but he came through the 200 and 300 faster than anyone ever has. he ran 20 point effortlessly, and as seen in his 300 against merrit it was smooth and as you could say a "hard stride" never once did he appear to be sprinting. whereas when you watch JW 43.45 he was sprinting and he got down to 20.19.
VN has a 19.9 200 already, from a while back, now imagine him basically doing that as a "stride"....you honestly think he cant drop a 19.5? he can do that in the early part of the season. if MJ has a 100 pr of 10.09, 19.32 and 43.18....and VN has faster 100 and 400 how can you not think he wont run sub 19.5?
