How exactly did he do the loop the wrong way after setting off the right way?
This is what is throwing me. Did John gather his pages for him and meet him and the top of the loop and they both b lined it down to the finish but Gary was out of it and forgot which way to come? How could the trails be trekked AND finish from wrong direction? HMMM!!
There is video of him talking with Laz and his wife that he was lost and swam across the river. He did not say why he crossed. Laz then asked him how he could get lost at the last book and come in the wrong way.

The bowsprit gets mixed with the rudder sometimes.

Thanks, he probably floated down a river in a canoe! Wheres the drone footage?

Have you people never been outside of a city? He didn't get lost until after getting all of the pages, then he took a wrong turn and ended up coming down the wrong trail and then had to try and cut back over to the finish line, which included having to swim a river and ended up coming out on the other side of the gate. He likely ended up travelling a lot farther than if he had come down the right trail.
Given that there is no official route and you just have to get the pages, it's pretty strange that some people (including Laz) are now suggesting he would need to take a specific route to the finish line for it to count. If that's the case then they need to start marking the entire route.
All this has done is confirmed what a shit head Laz is. Of course a fat chain smoking loser would take pride in designing course most people can't finish - but take a minute to think about how hard that really is? Does anyone here think they couldn't design a course that would be almost impossible to finish within a set cut off time that you get to invent? Including vague hidden check points along the way?
Aren't these Barkley and Badwater things kind of bogus?
cry me a river, will you
Laz has disqualified finishers in the past for taking a route on the wrong side of a creek. All participants in the race know that Laz has particulars when it comes to scrutinizing the course. You have proven your lack of knowledge on this topic. To then belittle the discussion to naming calls proves you're also a sore loser perhaps and maybe childish. Sorry this difficult race and it's RD isn't too your liking.

Yes. Barkley's is what happens when you combine utlra's with geocaching and/or pokemon go.

I like that quote.

Yeah, but with an American Ninja Warrior edge to it. It's got that weird obstacle course thing going on as well; where most people who enter can't even complete the course. People love that angle. Makes for good TV.
Judging from what I've seen today on social media, he had every runner, and many non-runners, in Canada pulling for him, and he handled a devastating loss with grace by thanking Laz and hugging him after.
I really, really hope he tries again next year, but he said last year it took him several months to recover, so.....we'll see.
You mad, bro?
No one said you had to ...
1- watch,
2- read about,
3- care about,
or
4- participate in this race.
Typical of a lot on LRC, badmouthing anything that isn't a perfectly flat race under perfect conditions.
Races like these are what make running, in general, more fun.

No one can replace ed Whitlock or terry fox as my Canadian running icons, but he came damn close today. Just epic and heartbreaking at the same time.

I enjoyed following the Barkley "Marathon", but I sure didn't think of it as running or a "marathon". I also really enjoy watching stuff like world's strongest man, american ninja warrior, survivor, and people eating bugs on fear factor. I don't think of these events as sports - I think they are what they are intended to be - akin to carnival attractions. Just because an event involves running, doesn't make it running. A lot of hiking occurs, why wouldn't you call it a hiking event? A lot of walking occurs, why not call it a walking event? You have to stay awake for most of 60 hours, why not call it a staying awake event? You arbitrarily choose to call it a running event, I don't know why, but that is just far from being an accurate description, and not more accurate than calling it a lack of sleep event. Yes, whatever Barkley's is, it is entertaining, but it is not running.

The stated distance is 100 miles. Gary did that 100 miles in almost exactly 60 hours. That's an average pace of 1.67 miles per hour.
I think it would be far more accurate to call the Barkley's Marathon an endurance challenge, it is clearly not a running race. There is no negative connotation involved, it is one hell of an endurance challenge. It just isn't running.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
