I'm generally a 19 minute 5k'er. This past fall I had an uxpected layoff that sapped all my fitness. I've been spending the past few months trying to build strength back up so I can start racing again. To get my strength back I've been doing fartleks and increasing them every week. So for example, one week I did 5 x 3 mins, then 4 x 4 mins, etc, and built up until this week. I just did a 3 mile steady run at 6:30 average pace. What would you do next to get faster? Should I start some shorter, faster track work-outs to get turn-over, and try to increase the length of the track intervals until I can hold a mile at like 6 minute pace?
