mitochondria and capillary development are supposed to be greatest when running slow for long. does that mean that a fast finish long run is actually a worse workout for aerobic endurance because you are running part of it at suboptimal paces for proper aerobic development?
i'd say the aerobic benefits of faster paces are always better. thing is we as distance runners want to do the least amount of intensity needed for the task at hand so that we can do as much as possible of it, ie mileage.

They each have their purpose. Neither is better or worse. Do both every other long run during a build up. Maybe 3 slow ones to every fast one during base building
Good question. The way I approach my long runs is this: First of all, all workouts are written in pencil & not pen. I hate to 'waste' a long run without some kind of faster paced running at the end so I 'plan' on finishing all long runs at least at MP and ideally at HMP or even a bit faster depending on how I feel. Depending on how I feel, is my answer. You feeling it at the end of a long run, go! If not, and many times I'm not, I just try to maintain whatever aerobic pace I've been on. It usually works out about 45%/45% maintaining pace vs. picking it up, with 10% of my long runs being the limp home, slowing down variety.
