Gotta love it. Every D1 coach says that, and then they still, somehow, put guys in meets that run over 4:00 for the 1500. That couldn't possibly be because they are bad coaches who turn 4:16 milers in 4:05 1500-ers, right? So it must be that they take more than just the cream of the crop...
If I were an Ivy League coach, I would reject a coach or athlete who contacts before being admitted about a 4:30 time. To show any interest to someone who might never produce at the D1 level is risky...kid goes there and then can't run faster than a 4:18 mile in college and badmouths the coach because their hopes were raised too much. If a kid gets in and wants to walk on after that with a 4:30 PR, then I'd be more likely to at least give them a shot.
D1 schools don't need 4:30 milers.
