Decathletes, some NFL's positions (cb, wr,running backs,etc...) Sprinters (the power/strength types), Gymnasts and some martial artists.
Some Olympic Weightlifters are incredible athletic as well in the 65-90kg weight range.
5. Probably something I'm not knowledgable about, such as a gymnast or rugby player
4. Soccer center midfielder
3. NBA Small Forward/Point Guard
2. Decathlete/Heptathlete
1. NFL linebacker
Boxers
1. Ultramarathoner
2. Rock climber
3. World XC competitor
4. Racewalker
5. Nordic skiier
Sorry, ultra marathoners and race walkers do not qualify as athletes. Yea some may be decent athletes, but mostly not.
In no particular order:
Decathlete: Speed, endurace, strength, coordination
NFL Wide receiver: Speed, strength, eye-hand coordination, toughness, incredible focus to hold onto the ball when getting nailed, some intelligence to know routes, plays, teamwork
NBA Basketball player: Speed, eye-hand coordination, strength, some endurance
Tennis player: Eye-hand coordination, quickness, strength, endurance, game strategy, and legs that can hold up to lots of lateral movement
MLB Baseball player: Eye hand coordination, quickness, great throwing ability, able to hit a 95 mph pitch, ability to stay focused though you might go several innings without having a ball hit to you. (I may catch some flack for calling a baseball player one of the best athletes out there, but admit it you runners, if you could play baseball at that level you would do it in a heartbeat.)

Quite a distance running bias you've got there.
None of the athletes "it totally depends" mentioned would tend tobe any good at strength movements, except for the rock climber at upper-body, grip-strength focused movements. None of them necessarily display much capacity for agility and explosiveness.
I back decathletes for the number one spot.

Well, if I could golf like Tiger Woods, or box like Floyd Mayweather, I'd do that in a heartbeat too. Doesn't mean they're best athletes in the world.
Some of you have been kinda brainwashed as to what sports have best athletes.
Ok:
1. Wrestling
2. Kickboxing
3. Boxing
4. MMA
5. Gymnastics
Curling
Darts
Archery
Rifle
Golf
ski jumping
Decathlon is the obvious answer, but it feels like cheating.
If I had to pick just ONE event, I would say POLE VAULT, and I defy anyone to show me a better combination of athletic requirements in one sport.
mountaineering
swimming
Nordic skiing
cycling
soccer

The reason you don't see barrel jumping anymore or ABC's Wide World of Sports is because that was a time when men were men and women were women. No confusion. And Evel Knevel wasn't afraid of death. Roller Derby was exciting and ecologists were complaint about global cooling. President Trump wants to "Make America Great Again". Do you?
