Two words: official transcripts. These will need to be requested by the employee, but they will come directy from the university with an embossed stamp on them that says "official transcripts". If the employee gives you a set, they are not official. They MUST come directly from the way not university. This is really the only way to know for sure. Transcripts will tell you when the degree was awarded. If that date isn't on them, the degree hasn't been awarded.
A diploma is pretty easy to forge.
