Rough year for Harvard continues....
Only 11 women on the XC roster ?!?!?

Only one way this ends.......
not sure how I feel about all of this. on the one hand, it seems like a case of a program going through growing pains in transitioning its training from more of a participatory program to a full fledged competitive D1 team....but the coach does strike me as a bit odd from that flotrack video.
Paul Gomper was the real deal as a distance runner. He obviously isn't just some helicopter parent mad because his kid isn't on varsity . Seems to me something is wrong there.

What did happen in that Flotrack video?

He was very touchy with one of his athletes. Putting his arm around her bare waist and holding her...rubbing her back. She was supposedly not feeling well. But if he's like that even when a camera is on him, makes one wonder
This says it all...
"We believe that he made it clear there was no place on the team unless you were ‘all-in’ and put athletics as your single highest priority."
What is wrong with asking your athletes to give a 100%? Storm in a teacup.

Nothing is wrong with giving 100% effort. But that doesn't mean you make the sport 100% of your life.
The video was censored by Flotrack shortly after it was published. The original included the touching by the coach, the censored one didn't.

Exactly, and harvard doesn't have scholarships so it's the coach's responsibility to strike a balance between getting the most out of the athletes without pushing them away. Hard to believe that some of this could not have been avoided if the coach was just more open in terms of communicating expectations clearly without an ego. But who am I to say. Don't know what happened exactly
Let's all remember why Wales-Dinan left Williams...makes everything wayyyy worse in that context.
Why did he leave Williams?
Well he's married to one of his former athletes that he coached at Williams.
This doesn't look great for Dinan-Wales, but the men's program has had it's issues too. Is it normal to have both teams under investigation?
Wow, Dan Lieberman puts his foot in his mouth again. If 2 out of 3 athletes get CUT by a new coach to reduce the women's team from 20+ runners to a more manageable 11 runners, that makes good sense to me. Remember, this is the same guy who said that Rob "RV" Young had the best distance running form he'd ever measured.
The complaints seem consistent with a coach actually enforcing some standards, which naturally upsets those who fail to meet them. Especially Harvard students who may be unfamiliar with being told, sorry, you're not good enough.
And what the hell is the rest of the Ivy League doing with women's teams of 27 runners and up? Anyone who wants to be on the team is allowed?? In my Pac-10 days, I don't think our men's and women's team combined had more than about 24 runners.
And yeah, if you couldn't contribute, you got cut. It's varsity intercollegiate athletics, not intramurals. Participation at that level is a privilege, not a right.

Harvard XC hasn't been the same since that Borat-esque dude transferred to the community college program a couple of years back. What was his name again? Maxim? VERY NICE!!!!!!
Just a minor correction. He's engaged to that athlete from Williams. Dude looks like a creep. There are lots of issues over there. Girls get aaaalllllll the attention and the boys coached by him are pretty much ignored.

Which gender is more likely to cry?

Um, the men have a different coach.
If you were parent of a very talented daughter that runs fast, would you send her to Harvard?
I sure as hell would not. Sorry, whether fair or not, the coach had to go
Life is not fair. Hands off the girls!

He has an unnerving presence
