I've been dealing with pain on the top of my right foot on and off for a few months. It just flared up again a couple of days ago after being fine for weeks. Made it through a run this morning but now it's hurting to walk. The pain is in the middle of my foot and right at the base of my ankle; there are actually two spots that are tender to touch. Could this be a bad bout of tendinitis? flexing my foot down is fine but flexing my foot back toward my shin causes some pain. Pain is worst when I'm rising up/putting pressure on the ball of my foot.

Is the pain directly under one of the eyelets or directly under where the laces cross? If so, this is a lacing issue. Let me know which it is and I'll post a solution for you.

It seems to be mostly along the 3rd metatarsal but starting in my mid/upper foot up to my ankle. When I walk the pain seems to be more in my ankle, but the sorest part to touch is more in my foot. The bend of the ankle as I walk it particularly painful. If I basically Frankenstein walk and don't actually bend my foot through toe-off it doesn't really hurt.

Sounds like either extensor tendintis or tibialis anterior tendinitis, probably the former. That injury really sucks, and if I'm not wrong it hurts the foot extending the toes. I would just ice it and reduce activity a little. I had that problem before but ignored it and just iced and it went away without reducing mileage, but it would be a good idea to reduce activity like speedwork or hills to a minimum.

Keep in mind it's just tendinitis so it won't be a serious problem as long as you take care of it NOW.

Right, definitely planning to take tomorrow off and reassess, as walking is fairly painful right now. Made it through a run this morning but after I stopped running is when it really started to hurt. Mainly I am just hoping it is not a stress fracture, especially since it is tender to touch.

Also the elliptical seems to irritate it, probably the toeing off motion. Not sure if that is more typical of tendinitis or stress fractures.

I have a recurring problem with the tendons that connect the metatarsals to the midfoot and rearfoot bones. I took 6 weeks off and saw a PT for it in 2013. It still comes back, but when it does, I tape it.

Taping helps a lot, but I didn't find any of the videos of foot taping to be useful for running so I developed my own technique.

Basically, I figured out what movement hurt and then taped to support and/or restrict the foot tendons when they make that movement. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Thanks, I appreciate the responses. Unfortunately it hurt so much today that I highly doubt I can try running tomorrow. Been icing and hopefully it will start to feel better. I just get paranoid that any pain, especially pain that keeps me from running, must be a stress fracture.

If you look at the image above, the pain is basically between areas 19/20 and 17 and 4 and 24 on the right foot.
