For me it took 26 years, 1 month, and about 15 days (my age when I did).
May, 2000 - started running (age 31)
October, 2000 - 3:42
May, 2001 - 3:10 (open BQ at the time)
So, one year.
got it with my first marathon
1 day. got it my first time.
I went from 4:15 to 3:45 (bq) in one year.
took me 2 hours and 51 minutes and a few seconds
3:11:45
But seriously, you can read all kinds of different experiences here:
18 months after starting to train. Fourth marathon. But I got within 2 minutes (2:52) after just 7 months (my second marathon). 2:50 was BQ back then.

Why were the BQ times lowered? (I guess i could google my own answer)

You can qualify for Boston with a 1500m time?
Didn't run for 18. years. Ran 3 months and got injured. Took 8 weeks off. Started back and ran for 6 weeks. Jumped in a marathon (Pittsburgh) and ran 3:12 BQ. Never had any interest in running Boston though.

In the 1990s, runners got slower, and the BAA had to soften qualifying times. Plus, more participants means more money for the BAA, I suppose.
