Your background will make a BIG difference in the time it takes to get back in shape. If you have a good 7 years plus of training under your belt, your aerobic base will be strong enough that you only need a few weeks to get back into real training. Anything less than that, and you're looking at around a 5-6 week buildup before you can even return to regular mileage, let alone peak fitness.
It's good you've been cross training - your metabolism, weight, and heart rate will thank you. But running is one of those sports where you NEED to be running to maintain fitness. It sucks, but it's true.
To expedite your process back, keep doing the elliptical as you reintroduce mileage. Also find a nearby soccer field and log some miles on the grass.
