It took me 5 months. Stop running immediatly or the more you run on the worse it gets. Youll end up breaking your leg if you dont stop. I use to be a good runner back then but this is the thing that really screwed me up. Unfortunately the coaches kept telling me it was shin splints since they didnt want to lose their number 1 guy on the team. ); still to this day I cant get back to my old times its been 2 years
man im sorry thats terrible. how long did you run for with the pain? when did you get that diagnosis? absolutely terrible that they made you run thorugh that. can't imagine the pain
They said I must of been running with it for more than 3 months and didn't even know how I could be standing. I got my injury in winter track and I missed out all of spring track. When I started running in XC I could feel ghost pains for for almost about 2 months before it settled down in the fall. And I actually almost got refractured again my senior year because the coaches tried making me run my old paces to get back to winning times. Ended up missing the whole month of March and only got to 10:28 my senior year. Now I train on my own and its tough running alone when your college has no track or XC.
metatarsal fracture. it took about 6-weeks before I dared run on it. no setbacks after that.

Been there, only my case was worst. I ended up taking a year off because i kept coming back too hard too soon. I ended up just lifting for that time off. When i did start running again i had phantom pains in the old sfx area even though I knew it was healed. Ease back into it, trust me i know it's easier said than done.
I had a stress reaction but it hurt pretty damn bad. physically couldn't run more than 2 steps at first.
I took a month completely off and started running after that. The pain didn't go away 100% until a month or two after that. I also had some bursitis at the same time though.
Yikes thats terrible! But did you still get to compete at the end of your hs running career?
Did you use a boot or crutches? And did you cross train? Also... when DD u get back into shape
Sort of, it happened early in xc season. Missed track, and had no base for the following xc season. Was just trying to get back to running, did track the following year and hs school was over for me.
Medial tibial. It took about 10 weeks. You need another full month AT MINIMUM. Walk away. There's lots of running after a stress fracture, but only if you give it time to heal. Mine was a fairly bad one.
Do yourself a favor man - Get a bike and a trainer. I have dealt with injury and think a trainer has helped me. I wear a HRM and am able to exactly simulate Marathon pace while chillin in my living room watching TV on the trainer. It's a great way to get good cardio and not have any impact, it will help you, take 4-6 weeks off don't think about running just think about improving cardio on the bike then start running again.
I took about three months completely off from running with a metatarsal stress fracture. I was able to ride a bike during that time as long as I avoided any hard uphill grinding, since the very rigid bike shoe was nearly as good as a cast for protecting the foot. But I didn't mess around with this injury and waited until it was entirely pain-free to start running again. It healed with no issues and has not recurred ten years later.
I've been biking quite a bit. Just mainly worried as to how good it will keep me in shape for my eventual return to running
I had a stress fracture in the 4th metatarsal of my left foot. Took 6 weeks total to heal, no setbacks since then (it's been over a year). Timeline went like this:
Fracture happened in the middle of a run one Saturday morning. Had to limp a half mile home. Luckily ortho was open that morning so I went straight to him. Xray showed nothing but I could hardly put any weight on it. He advised me to assume it's a stress fracture and just take 6 weeks off and not waste money on an MRI. Went home and laid in bed all weekend.
Showed up to work Monday morning in crutches. Boss took pity on me (he's also a runner) and allowed me to work from home the rest of the week. So I pretty much worked from my bed until the following Monday.
After a week of bed rest I could get around ok with one crutch. Did that for a week. Then I felt ok to walk without it. Did that for two weeks. Thought I was healed after 4 weeks and tried to run, I made it about 30 seconds and decided it wasn't going to happen.
Took another two weeks off and tried again. Some discomfort, but I figured it was healed. Slowly worked my way back up to 70 mpw over the next 6 weeks.
I had about the same experience as Island. I ran one year of low mileage HS CC before running in college. The increase in mileage was tough. After a few months I noticed something didn't feel right. The coach and training staff repeatedly told me it was just a calf strain despite my insistence otherwise. I kept running on it and it kept getting worse until I had to drop out of a race. A bone scan confirmed it was a stress fracture. It took months before I could run a step without pain and months after that before I could train with any sort of intensity.
Listen to your body. It would be better to be too cautious with the healing than to be too quick to return.
Had a tibial stress fracture in August 2015. Overall, it seemed like it took 9 months to heal. At first, I took off a month of doing nothing, then month of cross training. Tried to comeback running and it would still hurt Kept cross training and testing it out about every 6 weeks with no luck.
Finally by April I was able to run a few miles with out too much pain and would run primarily on soft surfaces.
I have been slowly able to build p to about 35-40 mpw over the last year with a long run of about 10 miles. Racing wise, I am not too far off my best, ( 7 seconds in the mile ,45 in the 5k) I attribute that to more focus on my diet and a good mix of cross training.
I'm not sure if it is in my head, but it still does not feel quite the same. So I will continue keep my eye on it, train on soft surfaces, and do all the shin and ankle strengthing exercises prescribed to me.
I had a sacral sfx. I didn't run for about 10 weeks. I could barely walk without pain for the first couple of weeks, so didn't start cross training (mainly swimming) until week 3-4. I started doing longer walks for exercise and elliptical at week 8-9, mainly to see if I was pain free. Started running week 10 and have had no problems since.
I had a severe stress reaction in my fibula that took a solid 6 weeks to heal before I started going for little jogs every other day (meaning two laps of gently jogging the curves and walking the straights on the track). Take it VERY easy when coming back- the weight bearing will stimulate healing but if you do too much too soon you'll be back to square one. Take the time off now to make sure it heals, I'm sure you'd rather miss out on one season than wreck your entire running career. I know how you feel though dude, I missed the end of indoor and all of outdoor track with my injury which sucked, but I'm back running strong now- good luck to you!!
how were your times when you came back? did you get into shape quickly?
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
