I had a fairly disappointing first year of X-C and only ran 18:14. I feel like I am in about 17:20 shape right now, but would it hurt me to do a road 5k in the middle of the season.

As long as your coach doesn't mind. Time Trials and Races have a similar training benefit as an interval workouts, only they're much more taxing since it's more prolonged periods of fast running. As long as you replace one of your harder run workouts with the 5k and don't try to shove a 5k in the middle of a training week that already has three hard workouts in them.
5k pace running will work on your aerobic capacity and running form/efficiency so if you're an 800m-2mile runner during track season you'll benefit from it. You'll have to do what the coach says though, and ask him how you'd incorporate that 5k into your schedule that week if he/she doesn't mind you running that 5k.
Would it make a difference that I'm a seventh grader? I started a thread about this last week but a ton of people accused me of being a troll. http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=8100643&page=2
You might not be allowed depending on your state rules. You should ask your coach.
You could just sign up with a fake name too. (Not that I would condone that.)
This would be stupid. It's track season, run track events. If you want to run a 5k do it after your season is over.

1/10
7th graders don't post on here.
Well I wish I didn't have to, but that 18:14 made me the number the number two man on the Varsity team, so I don't really have anywhere else to go for this type of advice.

It wouldn't necessarily hurt, but you'd be better off focusing on track during track season. Run a 5k once or twice over the summer off summer mileage to get some feedback if you need it.
