What would you guess the height of someone who is the ideal miler to be. Basically, all other thinrgs being equal, what height would be the most effective for running?
The way I see it height gives the advantage of a long stride, but the disadvantage of weight, as the same speed/power will cost more weight in muscle for a tall runner than a short one. (5'6" and 120lb can probably lift more- and definitely have more power for weight, which lends itself to speed- than someone who is 6'0" and 140 lb, despite the increased total weight). Obviously, the more you weigh, the more work your aerobic system has to do to run the same pace.
My guess for the ideal height is 5'9".
