SEC money in general and most of that I would say comes from football and the SEC Network contract with ESPN.

So if the head coach makes 400k, how much does the assistant coaches make?
He also coached a world record this year and signed one of the most marketable young athletes in the world. No one gave a crap about Kentucky Track until he got there. Worth it.
I was going to guess $80,000. Way off!
I think that my D 3 coach made al oat $80k back in the early 90s.
Is a coach not a professor? If a coach is teaching, and in many ways, conducting research, what is the difference? I know coaches who are as intelligent as any professor I have met. And many of those coaches are commonly regarded later in life as highly influential in the former student-athlete's eventual career.
Admittedly, the opposite is true on the negative end, as well. I've known both coaches, and professors, that were questionable in their logic... and that is putting it lightly.
$429,000 WTF, he must be pretty good. How many athletes in t & f earn more than that?
Frey at South Carolina makes 190 to finish bottom 3 to DFL every year.
A head track coach is also, as some even use in their official titles, a Director of Track Operations. Not only do you coach, teach, and possibly conduct research, you're running at a D1 school a decent-sized and diverse department of people. You're also responsible for sizable facilities and with far less of a staff than football or basketball get to run their facilities. So you're nearly like an AD for your own sports. I think the money is perfectly reasonable.

At D1 schools I would say rarely is a coach a professor or even assistant professor or even teaches a course. I doubt many coaches at any level conduct any research.
One can be influential regardless of degree. Most of us do not have coaches after high school and look how often people talk about their HS coaches being so influential.
Disgusting...a college track coach making $429,000 a year! ☹. At least the football & basketball head coaches are expected to win and will be shown the door if they "stink" up the joint for too long. The low expectation of winning & low job stress of a "track coach" being paid that kind of dough is ridiculous 😕. Most college sports fans can name the head football coaches of Bama, Michigan, Ohio St., etc. Less than 0.001% would know the names of the track coaches at these schools.
160k
Not to justify his salary, but NCAA I college coaches work two to three times the hours that any college professor works, and are often working 6-7 days a week. Summer is not really vacation for NCAA I track and xc coaches either. I could go on.
