Let's face it, USA races on TV are boring and the general population really doesn't care (outside of the crowds at NYC and Boston). Why is Nordic xc skiing so much more popular in Europe/Russia? 1. The top athletes compete against each other pretty much every week. 2. The courses are much more interesting and actually have real hills (unlike NYC; Berlin; Chicago; London). 3.The emphasis is on winning, not on times. There are no pacers, just racers. 4. Courses are much more fan-friendly, so you can see racers several times throughout the race [except for the really long point-to-point Loppets]
5. World Cup points let you actually see how the racers stack up against each other. Unlike road racing, where the rankings are so subjective and who cares anyway? I know most of you have never seen a xc ski race, but trust me,the fans are *passionate* about their sport! USATF could learn something here. The only downside? Global warming means races get cancelled or they need man-made snow.
