That was a good finish but hardly unique. Here are a few off the top of my head...
2013 outdoor -- Texas A&M would win if they did anything but finish dead last in the 4x400 while Florida won the relay, in which case they would tie for the team championship. They were leading, dropped the baton, finished last, and Florida won. Pat Henry looked pissed as hell that he had to share the trophy with Mouse Holloway, who looked like a kid on Christmas morning.
2001 indoor -- LSU's men were 9 points out of first going into the 4x400, so they needed to win the event and hope TCU didn't score. TCU got tangled up in an exchange and finished out of the points, LSU won the race and the championship. Head coach? Pat Henry.
2001 outdoor -- another flub by TCU. They lost the meet by a single point after Kim Collins false-started out of the 200m final.
1979 indoor -- UTEP thought they had it won going into the 4x440y but got DQd from the 4x880y and lost some points. UTEP didn't have a 4x440y qualifier, but Villanova did and was nine points behind. They won the relay and the meet.
