It's a tough world out there these days.
HS ran 9:58 for 2 miles. Went to JC because I loved running and wanted to keep doing it. Worked hard. Improved. Tranferred to a private university on a full ride.
Now I coach and have seen 4:10 kids get nothing and barely allowed to walk on from "big name" schools. It's all name brand to a lot of kids these days. They'd rather go to a big school and not run than a smaller one and get money.
