About halfway through my run today, I was running along the river path in town and see a regular runner up ahead of me. He's a middle aged guy, always wears tights and sunglasses, and looks moderately fit - although I never see him going faster than maybe 9:00 pace.
Anyway, I see him a couple hundred meters ahead of me, and know I'll probably pass him just before I head up the hill into the neighborhood. I was running at around 6:30 pace - not too fast, but not slow, either.
As I get about 3 steps behind him, he immediately kicks to about 6:00 pace - without looking back or saying anything. I'm not racing the guy, so I pretty much maintain my speed, and he gets a few meters further ahead of me. Then he slows down a little bit as we near the turnoff, and when it becomes clear he is going to continue on the same route as me, he starts sprinting again - this time at maybe 5:30 pace! He keeps it up until the path starts to wind towards the road, then he cuts to the grass and slows to a jog. I stay on the path, which zig-zags its way back to where he is going, and we end up meeting again where the shortcut meets the path.
I say "Good morning!" as I meet him, and he still doesn't say anything or even acknowledge me. At this point, he turned and crossed the street to go a different direction, and I continued up the hill.
Older guys, is this common behavior? Do you sometimes just decide to sprint to mess with a younger runner (and I'm not even that young)? I've probably seen this man a dozen times, but this is the first he has ever done this. I'd have to guess he decided to sprint without even knowing who was behind him, since he didn't look back - so I don't think it was necessarily a response to me.
