Why do we use the 4x400 start line instead of the 4x200 start? Is there any literature out there stating the reasoning behind using the 4x400 start besides "this is what everyone does"?

Doesn't the 400m runner cut in at the same point they do in the 4x4? If so, why would they start at a different line?
4x200 is run in lanes the full way. It is a four turn stagger. Most tracks don't have this marked.
The "long smr" is a 3 turn stagger, just like the 4x400.
